NCAA Update: Week 7

As we conclude a very busy day (and a sweet win in Dodger Stadium), here is your promised weekly update.

*Note: If you’ve been checking in on these, you might notice I changed the pitching chart a bit. The stat categories didn’t change, but I decided to sort them by K/9 instead of ERA.

NCAA Update, Week 6

A few thoughts here: I’m sure he’ll heat up as the season wears on, but I’m still not completely sold on Carlos Rodon as the favorite to go #1 this June. There’s just so much prep talent in this class, and Rodon hasn’t pitched as well as advertised so far. I’ll give him this though; he seems to be the kind of pitcher who can K 10 hitters in 5 innings, but you’re still not satisfied because he walked 3 or 4 and allowed a few runs. Those are pretty high standards, but so it goes for a potential #1 pick in the draft.

While I’m still on the fence about Rodon, I’m definitely not taking Jeff Hoffman if I have the #2 pick… not unless he shows me more than what he’s put together here in the first month and a half. There are 30-something pitchers on this list, and his ERA grades out the worst of the group. He might throw high-90’s, but you still have to achieve the results at some point if you want to be considered a top 5 pick. As it stands right now, Nola, Imhof and Finnegan are still probably the hottest pitchers in the land, while lefty Newcomb continues to lay low out there at Hartford. The more I read on him, the more I like.

On the hitting end, Trea Turner might have had one of the best weeks in the country, hitting 3 HR. Turner had been pretty quiet at the plate in the last few weeks, but he looks ready to breakout now. He’s likely still a top 10 pick this summer. The guy I keep looking to is Bradley Zimmer of USF. In a year when power is down across college baseball, he’s sitting there with 5 HR to go along with 11 SB early. I’d still like the Giants to take a pitcher with their 1st round pick, but he seems like a guy who might be playing himself easily into top 25 consideration.

At some point, I feel like I might need to cut the list down a bit, but I figure the more names we can become familiar with, the better. I would love some feedback on these weekly updates though. Is the chart difficult to follow? The formatting is not perfect, and I really don’t know how to fix it. Is it too cluttered? I’d love to hear any thoughts you have.

NCAA Update, Week 5

Sorry, this was supposed to go up yesterday. Last night’s numbers are not included. Sounds like some of the big guns had tough outings, including Rodon, Weaver and Beede. Nola and Finnegan continue to tear it up. I’m not completely sold on Hoffman to this point. I have to admit I don’t follow the hitters quite as closely. It seems like some of the guys who are supposed to go 1st round aren’t really taking off just yet. Turner is among that group, although he’s keeping his average up. Hopefully we’ll see some power from these guys in April!

NCAA Update, Week 3

The list keeps growing. The household names are still here, but you’ll find a few new sleepers littered throughout as well. Tons of solid pitching performances early. The hitters have some work to do, but I don’t think we’ll get a read on these guys until the warmer months come around. With a good portion of the country playing under less than stellar conditions last month (even in California!), the weather just hasn’t been very conducive to offense. Let’s look for that to change as March rolls on.

I wanted to share a recent find which has made tracking players so much easier. I found a link on NCAA.com to an individual career stat tracker, so I thought I’d post the link here. You can enter in any player, from any NCAA division. Very handy, as now I don’t have to track down each player on his school’s website anymore! I’m a little new to the college game, so cut me some slack, will you?

NCAA Update, Week 2

You’ll notice I’ve added some names to the list. I didn’t think 25 was enough, so I decided to go with an even 40. As the college season goes on, I’ll keep working to add (or subtract) draft-eligible players whose stock looks to be on the rise this spring.

Right now, LSU’s Aaron Nola and TCU’s Brandon Finnegan are off to very impressive starts on the mound. If they continue that trend, each should be easy first round picks this summer. How about Grahamm Wiest of Cal State Fullerton? That guys is off to a monster start as well. DrB just ran a draft profile on Wiest the other day, I’d recommend giving it another look.

Staumont, the final pitcher on the list, plays for Azusa Pacific (who moved from NAIA to Division II recently). He’s a flamethrower, topping out at 98-99, and has begun the year on a tear in southern California. He’s also started four of his team’s first 10 games, so let’s hope he doesn’t get overworked this season. He’s an interesting name to watch come draft day.

On the hitting side, Conor Gillaspie’s younger brother Casey is off to a heck of a start for Wichita State, as is Cal Poly’s Nick Torres. It’s very early, so these are obviously all small sample sizes, but Dylan Davis and Taylor Sparks are two guys with big draft aspirations who have struggled out the gate. We’ll see if their bats wake up as spring comes around.

NCAA Update, Week 1

Trying something new here at Cove Chatter, as we take a look at the first week of play from some of the top 2014 college draft prospects. As the season moves along, I’ll add or drop players as I see fit, but we’ll try to keep it at a steady 25 for now. Eventually I’d like to have some comments up on these guys, but for now I just want to get their stats posted, as most of the pitchers will be on the hill for their second start of the season tomorrow (Friday) night.

Hey, who said this was just a Giants blog?! Ok… I did. But it sure can’t hurt to expand things a little bit. There are tons of talented draft-eligible players out there this year – especially on the pitching side – so I hope you’ll use these updates as a nice reference as the season moves along. If there are any glaring omissions to this so-called “Terrific 25,” please feel free to let me know.
