Steven Okert | LHP, 22 yo, 6-3, 210 | 2012 Draft – 4 | (A) 44 G, 60.2 IP, 2.97 ERA, 8.2 H/9, 3.6 BB/9, 8.8 K/9
First full season as a pro was solid but unexciting for the former OU Sooner. He got quite a bit of love in Giants top prospect lists last season, but I don’t imagine we’ll see his name much this year. He’s a big-bodied southpaw with a slider that’s kryptonite to lefties (who hit only .189 against him in 2013). The Augusta beat writer David Lee wasn’t as high on him as some of the other bullpen arms on the staff. When I asked him why, he answered that Okert’s previous mid-90’s velocity just wasn’t there. He should be in San Jose next season, and I could see him working his way into at least a lefty specialist role in the bigs someday. He may not get the hype of other relievers in the system anymore, but I certainly wouldn’t forget about him.
They said it: “Saw him in college and loved him, good stuff, nice delivery, gets tons of grounders. Underrated.” ~ John Sickels, Minor League Ball
