Projected 2014 Opening Day 25-Man

This is my very early attempt to put together a 25-man Opening Day squad for the Giants. This projection assumes four free agent signings (Lopez, Haren, Arroyo, Ellis) and one trade (Ruggiano – credit to DrB on the idea for him, with my predicted package on the Giants’ end). If the salary numbers hold true, this team would come in right around $160 million on the payroll (including Zito’s buyout). That’s at least a $20 million bump from the 2013 payroll.

I’ll be the first to admit this isn’t the youngest (or sexiest) group by any stretch, but I do think it’s pretty realistic considering the market and Brian Sabean’s track record for spending… The one thing I can see throwing a wrench into things is an unexpected trade for a starting pitcher. Otherwise, don’t expect any long-term or hefty free agent contracts this winter. That money went to Pence and Lincecum. This is a team banking on rebound seasons from a handful of guys… It’s still a roster that’s still built around younger players like Posey, Bumgarner and Belt. It’s also a high-risk, high-reward rotation. I won’t deny that. We’ll see how things shake out this winter, but this is my best guess at a roster for now as we head into the offseason. Feel free to tear it apart if you must, and I’ll certainly expand on my reasoning for each of these moves when I am not working from an iPad.
